What is Barista FIRE?
The basic idea of Barista FIRE is simple: you do not necessarily need enough wealth to cover all of your living expenses purely from investment returns. Instead, your invested portfolio covers a large part of your expenses, while you cover the remaining gap through part-time work, freelance work, a small online business or another flexible activity.
This can make Barista FIRE reachable much earlier than classic FIRE. Instead of waiting until full financial independence, you reduce your dependence on a full-time job step by step.
The term “Barista FIRE” originally comes from the idea of leaving full-time work and taking a more relaxed part-time job, such as working as a barista. In practice, the income can come from many sources: part-time work, freelancing, consulting, rental income, digital products, side projects, apps, websites or other flexible work.
Example calculation
In short: with classic FIRE, your portfolio needs to cover all of your expenses. With Barista FIRE, your portfolio only needs to cover the part of your expenses that is not covered by additional income.

Frequently asked questions about Barista FIRE
What does Barista FIRE mean?
Barista FIRE means that your portfolio covers a large part of your expenses, while the remaining gap is covered by part-time work, side income, freelance work or other flexible income sources.
Why do you need less wealth with Barista FIRE?
Because your portfolio does not need to cover all of your expenses. For example, if you spend €3,000 per month but earn €1,200 from flexible work, your portfolio only needs to cover €1,800 per month.
Who is Barista FIRE suitable for?
Barista FIRE can be interesting if you do not want to stop working completely, but want more freedom, less stress or more control than in a traditional full-time job.
Is Barista FIRE financial advice?
No. This calculator is for educational and informational purposes only and does not replace personal financial advice, tax advice or retirement planning.
Is Barista FIRE the same as working part-time?
Not exactly. Working part-time only means reducing working hours. Barista FIRE means your portfolio already covers a large part of your expenses and you only need to cover the remaining gap through work.
What income counts as Barista income?
Barista income can come from many sources: part-time work, freelance projects, consulting, rental income, an online business, apps, websites or other flexible activities. The key is that the income should be realistic and sustainable.
What happens if my Barista income disappears?
If your additional income disappears, your portfolio needs to cover a larger part of your expenses again. That is why it makes sense to plan with a safety margin and regularly check whether your assumptions are still realistic.
