What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE means that your current invested assets may already be large enough to grow to your required FIRE number by your target age through compounding. In theory, you may no longer need to keep saving for retirement.
The Coast FIRE calculator first estimates your FIRE number. Then it discounts that amount back to today's required portfolio value using your expected real return. This shows how much invested wealth you need today for your money to keep growing “on its own” until your target age.
Coast FIRE does not automatically mean that you can stop working right away. It means that your retirement portfolio goal may already be “on track” as long as your assumptions turn out to be realistic.
Example calculation
If you have about €265,000 invested today, that portfolio could grow to around €900,000 by age 65 at a 5% real return.
When does Coast FIRE make sense?
Coast FIRE is especially interesting if you have already built a meaningful portfolio and want to know whether your retirement goal may already be mathematically “on track”. You may no longer need to save aggressively for financial independence and could potentially reduce your savings rate or use your income more flexibly.
However, Coast FIRE does not mean that you are immediately financially independent. You still need to cover your current expenses through work, self-employment or other income. The advantage is that your invested assets may have enough time to grow to your FIRE number by the target age.
The result depends heavily on your assumptions. Small changes in return, inflation, target age or monthly expenses can significantly change your Coast FIRE number. Treat the results as an estimate and test different scenarios.
FIRE
Your portfolio is already large enough to fully cover your expenses through withdrawals.
Barista FIRE
Your portfolio covers part of your expenses. You cover the remaining gap through flexible work or side income.
Coast FIRE
Your current portfolio is not enough for full FIRE yet, but it could grow to your FIRE number by your target age without further savings.
Frequently asked questions about Coast FIRE
What does Coast FIRE mean?
Coast FIRE means that your current invested assets may be large enough to grow to your required FIRE number by your target age without additional savings.
Can I stop working immediately with Coast FIRE?
Not necessarily. Coast FIRE mainly means that your retirement portfolio may be mathematically on track. You still need to cover your current expenses with income until your target age.
Why is the real return important?
The real return accounts for inflation. If you assume a 7% return and 2% inflation, the calculator uses a simplified 5% real return.
Is Coast FIRE financial advice?
No. This calculator is for educational and informational purposes only and does not replace personal financial advice, tax advice or retirement planning.
